Brainwashing Turning Destinies into Tragedies

Most children through their childhood all the way to their time of adolescence spend their years thinking about their future careers, families, and aspirations in life. From a young age, many of us are taught to dream and dream big—because anything is possible and we possess the potential to be whatever we set our minds to.

 

Sadly, this is not the case for many young boys in the Middle East: more specifically, those from the country of Kosovo.

As I sat with my burning, silver computer lounging across my lap, I awaited any sort of notification from my despondent device. It may have only been a Wednesday night back home, but it was the third day without the familiarity of my school walls and I longed for the human contact the flu did not allow me. But, just as every good story goes, I was stuck with the flu on perhaps one of the most influential and awe-inspiring days of my junior year of high school.

 

Area high school students often consider my school the “nerd school” or the “hipster school”. Perhaps this is because Maggie L. Walker Governor's School is ranked one of the top ten public high schools in the nation, but some of the misconceptions regarding my school were thoroughly combated and effectively squashed consequently. Because on September 17, 2014, the movement of a dress code protest launched by guys and supported by girls began its first steps as an unforgettable campaign for gender equality and dress code recognition by both the student body and the administration.
