What Are You Singing?

Do you ever start singing along to a song even when you’re not paying attention to what you’re singing? Music is a big part of our lives, we listen to music at the gym, when we shower, when we’re driving, when we’re bored and much more. Musical artists are fighting every day to get their song to the top of the charts so it is listened to. How do they do that?

Artists have to prove they are better than all other artists by coming up with catchy beats and chorus lines that get stuck in the listeners head. This happens probably a little too well. A new song that came out recently and is playing all over the radio has jumped to number five on the “Billboard Top 100” and it sure has found its way into Americans heads. If you search for covers of this song on YouTube 242,000 videos come up, and this song is about being high. The song I’m talking about is Habits (Stay High) by Tove Lo.

The song goes on to talk about getting the “munchies” throwing up in a tub and sleeping with “daddies on the playground”. I will admit that the song is catchy and has a cool beat but when you listen to the words it is shocking what you are actually singing. I don’t know if I’m the only one but it is terrible to hear little children singing about being “high all the time” or sleeping with older men. Whether or not you do that type of activity, singing those types songs are promoting those behaviors. We should be promoting songs (like “Try” by Colbie Calliat) that promote self-esteem and acceptance of yourself and others. Music is always going to be here so why not make music that can change lives for the better.
